Area Reps letter to the Midland Solo Fleet,

Dear Solo Fleet Captains.

The 2017 Dinghy Rope Midland Series is about to start.

The first event is at Draycote on the 1st of April. The second event is at  Banbury on the 22nd April.

There are a few changes for 2017 season. There will be 11 events with 5 to qualify. Draycote are coming back into the Midland Series and will hold The Midland Area Championships. This is a new event for our area and will be part of Will Loy's Area Championships series.

We have a new sponsor.  'Dinghy Rope' have kindly agreed to sponsor the series with an increased prize fund which should mean all qualifiers will receive a voucher of around £25.  If you follow the link to Dinghy Rope on the Solo web page, you will see they not only sell a full range of ropes but also chandlery and clothing, all at a discount price.

There will be Vintage prizes this year. At the end of the series, the top 3 Vintage boats will receive additional prizes. Boats with sail numbers below 5000 (Built before Feb 2009) will be classed as Vintage. Originally I was going to use Will Loy’s definition ie Boats with sail numbers below 4268 but when I looked closely at last years Open meeting entrants there were very few boats this old taking part. I want the Vintage category to be competitive and so I think making it open to newer boats will mean far more boats taking part.

I’m pleased to say that Fernhurst Books have agreed to sponsor the Vintage category and will give the winner at each event a book. I hope this will encourage people with older boats to travel to events and qualify for the series. Thanks to Duncan Syme for suggesting the idea.

The team prize will continue this year with the top three boats for each club counting towards the Midland Area Team prize. Northampton is the current holders and were worthy winners last year.

There will be 11 events this year which I think is right and is one more than last year. This means we have more clubs wanting to hold Opens than there are spaces, so to decide which clubs have their open in the 2018 Midland Series I will again create a Midland League table at the end of the season. The bottom Club or Clubs will be dropped in 2018. Please support your home club by qualifying for the series, enter your home Open and join the association. This you will help your club's league position.

The 11 events this year are;

Over the last two years, the numbers attending the Midland Regional events has greatly increased. Last year the average attendance at our Opens was 24 with the largest event having 33 and the lowest 19. At the end of 2016 there were 23 series qualifiers.  So please make the effort to travel and you will be rewarded with a well attended and run event.

Can I ask each club sends a Open meeting report to Yachts and Yachting again this year. It really does make a difference. Just a few words about the day, mention the sponsors and if you can a couple of photos.

The Midland events and information are posted on the Solo web page and on Facebook group ‘Solo Midland Area’so please take a look and come and join us, please remember we are in the middle of the country so none of you have far to travel!

Nigel Davies.
