Boat, trailer and car parking

Upon arrival in the town please proceed to the harbour entrance on Beacon Quay, the barrier will be manned from midday on Friday 7th until around 18.00 and again on Saturday 8th from 08.00 to 18.00.  Outside these hours please press the button and request the harbour office or security to give you access.

Please park your boat on Haldon Pier as close as possible to the next boat.  Once you have unloaded your car please move it to the adjacent car park as quickly as possible.  A clearway must be kept along Haldon Pier for commercial and emergency vehicles.

It will be necessary to move all double and triple trailers to Daddyhole Plain once you have unloaded.  Full directions to Daddyhole Plain which is only 5 minutes away will be given to you upon arrival.  If space on Haldon Pier becomes tight we may be asked to move all trailers off site…so please park boats as efficiently as possible.  Your launching trolley will be marked with a number and there will be volunteers to assist with launching and recovery.

The Royal Torbay Yacht Club can be found on Beacon Terrace just above the harbour and on the opposite side of the road from the top floor of the car park.  The Race Office located on the ground floor of the yacht club will be open from 13.00 on Friday 8th July.  The club offers a facility to look after small items of value whilst you are afloat (car keys, mobile phone, wallets etc), this will be explained at registration.

There are a number of small businesses located on Beacon Quay including a small chandlery.  Emergency sail repairs at a local sail loft can be arranged by the club.

Bar and catering

The club bar will be open all day Sunday to Friday.  A wide selection of catering will be available through the week, including breakfasts, packed lunches, bar snacks, sailing suppers and bistro nights on Friday evenings.  Only food purchased on the premises can be eaten in the club.  Coffee can be bought from the bar and restaurant.  Detailed information on all catering will be available from the race office.

Other useful local information

Two banks with ATMs are located on the Strand, just 5 minutes walk away.  A further ATM is located close to the barrier entrance to Beacon Quay.

Equipment inspection

Equipment inspection will take place on Haldon Pier between 09.30 and 17:30 on Saturday 9th July.  We intended to check the following items:

  1. That all sails have been measured – this means that they need to have an RYA or ISAF sticker on them.  There will be no facility to perform sail measurement at Torbay, so please ensure that you get your sails measured before you head to the nationals.
  2. That all hulls weigh at least 70kgs.  This will be done with centreboards and control lines in place and an allowance will be made for the weight of these items.  Your boom can be held clear with the mainsheet and kicker still attached.  If your boat appears to be light we might ask you to remove the centreboard and boom to allow a more accurate measurement.
  3. A visual check of all equipment, including ensuring that you have a tow rope of at least 10m length and 6mm diameter (limited supplies of suitable rope will be available to buy).

After you have unpacked please proceed to the inspection area with your boat, rudder sail(s) and towrope.  There is no need to bring your mast.  The inspection process is completely reliant on volunteers so please can all of you help to lift boats, etc.  And please bear in mind that those of us doing the inspection might want to stop for lunch, etc during the day!

There will be no facility to inspect boats on Sunday morning.  If you are unable to arrive in Torquay before Sunday can you please let me know so alternative arrangements can be made.

Registration will take place in the clubhouse.  Please bring your certificate and ensure that the buoyancy endorsement is up to date.  We will check that you are a class member (we will happily take the fee for this on the day) and that entry details are correct (sail number, age category and the like).  You will be asked for your food choice for the class dinner and extra tickets will be available for this dinner and the BBQ.  Both will be £10 per person per evening.
