Overall winner decided in final race of the series

Friday, November 24, 2017

Martin Honnor wins the Northern Travellers Series Trophy, beating last year's winner into second place with win in the final event of the series.

Steve Denison started with a win at Ripon in very light air, with Alan Bishop and Innes Armstrong making up the podium places.

The next event at West Riding saw a new set of names in the frame, with Philip Barnes overall winner from Lee Tennant and Nick Brooke.

Next up was Carsington, a joint event with the Midland circuit and a great turnout, Mike Simms, showing Ollie Wells and Steve Graham how to do it in a fleet of 33.

So after three events there was no clear front runner and all to play for. Steve Graham then came to the fore, winning at Ogston in style with three bullets, followed by home boy, Martin Honnor and Lee Tennant again, keen to qualify before the last event of the season.

Steve Graham continued his winning run and won the event at Burwain, alongside winning the Northern Area Championship, well done. Second place went to a sailor absent from the first part of the season, Ian Hopwood, with Innes Armstrong third again.

Now Steve Graham was leading overall and Steve Denison began to put some results together with a second at Leigh and Lowton, a third at Delph and a win at Budworth to move into the lead. Meanwhile Martin was beginning to put his own series together with a win at Leigh, another at West Kirby where he took three bullets, and a second at Budworth, so it was all down to the last event at Hollingworth.

On the final day, Steve Denison led the first race and looked close to winning the series, but was chased down by Martin who eventually broke through to win. Innes Armstrong broke through and went on to win the second race with Martin second and Steve third. So any one of the three could win the event on the last race.

Denison and Honnor were fighting it out for top spot and it was not until the last mark of the last lap, that local sailor, Julian Parry took the lead to win, and Martin got inside berth at the mark. That saw Martin win the day, and the overall series.

A fantastic result meaning that after 11 events Martin was the Northern Series Champion for 2017, and Steve was the runner up. Steve Graham finished 3rd in the series. Well done all. The full series results are on the Solo Website.

After the Prize Giving held at Hollingworth, where Winder Boats kindly provided extra prizes, Philip Barnes from Budworth has become the new Northern Series Rep.

For the fourth year running Burwain retained the team trophy, with Steve Graham, Innes Armstrong and Lee Tennant 3rd, 4th and 5th in the series, nobody was close.

Next year?

Look forward to seeing you on the water in 2018.

Nick Hornsby

Northern Rep (retired)
