Magic Marine January Photo Competition.
Still enjoying sailing a Solo at the age of 79. Brian Fisher has won the Magic Marine Photo competition for January 2018. Photo attributed to David Eberlin from Notts County S.C.
"Maybe I have sailing in my blood as my Grandfather used to skipper a Brixham Trawler out of Brixham in the days of sail.
When I was young I was allowed to take the helm of a sailing boat that my father hired one day on the Norfolk Broads.
I sailed recreationally as a youngster in oddities, such as a rubber dinghy fitted with a sail
then a Prout Seabird folding dinghy which consisted of two wooden planks with a canvas bottom which folded flat for transportation on a car roof.
I enjoyed sailing a home built Mirror dinghy with wooden spars and rope stays around Poole Harbour and even out to sea.
I remember those adventurous trips around the battleships which were still moored on the river Dart in Devon.
My first taste of racing was in 1976 as crew in a Flying 15 at Northampton SC. Occasionally I had the chance to helm and discovered that I really enjoyed it.
I started sailing a Solo in 1994 with an almost new Thresher 3931 that had been sailed by Tony Thresher for it's first 3 months.
It was the first of his white painted wooden boats, ie. no veneered deck. Later it was fully re-furbished by Paintcraft and has since had quite a bit of touching up.
Eventually it was sold at 20 years old and is still going strong. Then I bought a 4 year old Ovington/Boon FRP Solo 4882 which I still have.
I have been a member of several sailing clubs namely Banbury, Great Moor, Melton Mowbray and now Notts County and
I still sail at Open events in the Midlands area and National events within 100 miles.
Now I am in my 80th year and hope to continue sailing my Solo for many years to come.
Well done Brian, your enthusiasm and love for the National Solo wins you a £50 voucher, courtesy of Magic Marine.
