This should have been the writeup for the event which was due to be held at St Andrews SC on July 1-2. This is a small club on the east coast of Scotland where we have sailed before and always enjoy a good welcome. Sadly this past weekend the weather had other ideas. The sun shone constantly but it was very windy. Start time on the Saturday was due at 12.30 but on arrival it looked very marginal and the wind was forecast to increase. At 11.30 we had a meeting of the sailors and the club and all agreed to abandon for the day and try for an early start of 10.30 on Sunday. Kevan Gibb, who with Nigel Orkney had travelled overnight from Lyme Regis having been sailing with another class (really!) arrived just in time for the meeting. He had also persuaded his brother Roger to come all the way from Torpoint Mosquito for the weekend. Although there was no sailing the club, situated right above the beach, were ready with bacon rolls and cakes - all included in the £5 entry fee thanks to the big contribution from the class association. One very generous sailor insisted on handing over an extra £10 to the club for his share of the food.
Sunday dawned sunny again, but it was very clear that there was to be no sailing given the strength of the wind. Back into the club for breakfast and such was the size of the pile of cooked bacon I had to get the rest of the fleet out of the dinghy park to help out. We were asked if we wanted any eggs cooked but Patrick Burns was the only taker - clearly realising that his privileges of being class President are soon to end!
The club love hosting the Solos and there was a short discussion about finding an alternative date for the event this year involving the club and the sailors. With the Commodore, Treasurer and another committee member present St Andrews SC were rapidly able to confirm that they can host us on August 19-20 for the re-scheduled HD Sails Scottish Solo Championships. With the entry fee only £5 and no competing events we hope for a good turnout, and a bit less wind. See you there.
