Carbon mast topic

Ian McDonald posted this 02 April 2019

There was an " interesting" post on the Solo Facebook page yesterday. A Solo carbon mast option!.. I dismissed it as an April 1 jape, but several were saying that testing was underway and discussion was fairly credible.

Then the discussion was removed.

Did April 1 end early?

Sounds like the carbon mast "about which we cannot speak" is on display in the dinghy park at Carnac!

when is a solo not a solo.well boat on boat you remember those days of fleet racing when it was wood or wood, stone or lovett, then rule benders anonymous arrived and different shapes arrived always within class rules of course. Then new materials GRP, Epoxy< frp,variuos="" sail="" materials="" and="" shapes,="" various="" aluminium="" masts="" thick="" and="" thin,="" stiff="" and="" bendy.="" solo="" sailors="" seem="" much="" lighter="" these="" days="" and="" the="" rigs="" reflect="" that="" it="" seems="" which="" is="" good="" which="" means="" that="" light="" and="" heavies="" can="" on="" occasion="" sail="" at="" the="" same="" speed.="" the="" trouble="" is="" other="" classes="" have="" turned="" up="" designed="" lighter="" and="" with="" carbon="" masts="" and="" booms.="" so="" its="" the="" competition="" that="" is="" driving="" change.="" and="" price="" hikes.="" more="" less="" an="" old="" boat="" can="" race="" very="" well="" against="" other="" solos.="" but="" not="" that="" well="" on="" handicap="" against="" the="" competition="" of="" faster="" carbon="" based="" designs.="" possibilities="" --="" i="" can="" see="" lots="" of="" benefit="" with="" a="" sealed="" carbon="" boom="" ,="" that="" would="" need="" a="" loose="" foot="" option.="" mast="">> use would isolate nearly every other boat currently sailing with aluminium. So a new solo could have a carbon every thing but then its not a solo and would be very expensive but lighter and faster. I have owned and sailed 25 plus Solos of all types my current Lovett is the fastest 3179 so far

I have complete faith in our commitee protecting the boat against any wacky ideas. I couldnt see that with full shrouds without spreaders and a minimum weight ,how the change to carbon could achieve anything than making us all poorer. And my wooden Miles continues to overcome her naff helm and consistently beat modern boats at Blithfield.
