Thoughts from Felpham Solo Open Saturday 12th May topic

Mike Wilkie posted this 18 May 2018

I know that there has been a write up on Yachts & Yachting but there hasn’t been anything said about the Sailing Club itself. On the Saturday, the sun and wind gods decided not to come out and play, even though the weather had been brilliant all week and was again on the Sunday. The temperature didn’t get much above 9-10 “C”, however the temperature was much higher within the club, everybody was on a high making sure that all the participants were looked after. In charge of that was ex President of the Solo Association from the mid-eighties, now Rear Commodore and for those that remember Paul Hemsley. He’s doing alright, keeping well as can be expected as we’re getting a bit long in the tooth these days. Guy our new Newsletter Editor was on parade welcoming all there. Guy is Vice Commodore of the club. It should be said that it was a joint meeting with Contenders - I’m not a great fan of joint meeting but I have to say that it wasn’t a problem. One of the Contender sailors came up to me and said, “Is that Mike Wilkie? You don’t remember who I am do you?” How could you not recognise a voice like Graham Scott’s? Ex Solo Champ from Abersoch 1994 and a very good sail maker, only builds sails for Contenders these days. For those that remember Graham, he’s also keeping well - a little short on hair but other than that he’s fine. The club at registration provided free tea or coffee along with a bacon butty, in fact the drinks were free all day.

When it was time to go afloat it was high water and we launched down the concrete slip bow first into an on shore swell. Launching was no problem - they had a well-drilled shore team and when we came ashore, all the launchers were lined up both side of the slip, Solos on one side, Contenders on the other so there was no confusion. Well done to the shore team and to Ross Fisher with his on board race team! There has to be a mention to Mark Harper who now works part time for Rooster. Rooster kindly sponsored the event and Mark did his bit in flying the flag for Rooster and a thank you must be said to Rooster for the goodies that they gave away. At the prise giving, the food was fantastic, more then enough to go round, Well Done Felpham Sailing Club.

All that needs to be said is WHEN DO WE GO BACK?
