Website security topic

David Cornish posted this 11 November 2017

Hi, the new website looks great and the functionality seems good too.

I'm a little surprised, these days, that it doesn't have the security of https, particularly since you have personal details and you can buy membership and stuff, though I expect WebCollect is secure (I haven't got that far yet).

Chrome puts an "info" button and a "Not secure" comment in the Address (URL) Bar.

Clicking on the button, Google tells me -

"The site isn't using a private connection. Someone might be able to see or change the information you send or get through this site.

You might see a 'Login not secure' or 'Payment not secure' message. We suggest that you don't enter sensitive details, such as passwords or credit cards.

On some sites, you can visit a more secure version of the page:

Select the address bar. Delete http:// and enter https:// instead. If that doesn't work, contact the site owner to ask that they secure the site and your data with HTTPS."

Hi David

Thank you for your concern.

For the roll out of the new website there is a structured release path of features. On this roll out we intended to serve the site under HTTPS. This came up as a lower priority over other things, therefore the launch of the site went live without HTTPS enabled.

As we don't collect any sensitive information on the site with regards to credit card details I deemed it to be less of a priority while we ironed out some other teething problems.

I have now moved the site going to HTTPS up the priority list and have made the site to be served under HTTPS for all requests. If you refresh your browser when next viewing the site it should now be served under HTTPS.

I apologise if this has raised any concern with any member that the site maybe insecure. At no time has your credit card details been left exposed as we do not save or handle any credit card information within this site.

Kind Regards Neil Hodges

Webmaster.
